Honky Tonk Stomp V Recap: Memphis vs Nashville

The first game of the Honky Tonk Stomp V, saw Nashville's Music City All-Stars take on Memphis's Hustlin' Rollers. Nashville (3SC) is one of the premier leagues in the South Central region, and playing a rather tough schedule this year. While they have lost to Kansas City (1SC), they most recently brought home a big win over the West's Jet City (7W). After that there is little doubt that Nashville can compete at the WFTDA Championship Tournament. Memphis (11SC), is coming from two back to back loses to Green Country (9SC), though they have had a generally positive season. Though Memphis played their best, a rapidly improving Nashville took home a huge win. The final was Nashville 328 to Memphis 41.

The first jam of the game saw both team's premier jammers going head to head. Nashvillle's Ramb0 Samb0 jammes against Little Cinner. The jammers were released slow but the action picked up fast with  Rambo getting a quick lead. Memphis's captain and pivot Broken Bones proceeded to knock Rambo down and kept her in the pack for several laps before Rambo went on to score 3 points to Memphis's 0. Successive jams continued to have slow starts, with the pack being dragged out past the apex of the turn before the jammers got free. Regardless, Nashville continued to put up lots of small point grabs while keeping Memphis from scoring at all. About 7 minutes into the game Nashville's strong teamwork and blocking held Memphis's jammer in the pack for two solid minutes, while Ramb0 Samb0 racked up an amazing 30 points - that's while not in a power jam boys and girls. 10 minutes into the game Nashville managed to fill the penalty box and give Little Cinner a chance to put up 5 points. The power jam continued into the next jam, and Memphis picked up 9 more points, putting the score at 43 - 13 with just 18 minutes left in the half. The score would not be this close for the rest of the game, however.

When Nashville got to put a jammer back on the track they went with regular Rambo Samb0, picking up lead after lead and point after point. Nashville's pack control made sure that they were always scoring; speeding up and slowing down as needed, and never letting Memphis's jammer get even an initial pass. When Memphis did get lead on rare occasion, they were quickly tracked down and forced to call it off by the Nashville's speedy jammers. With about 10 minutes left in the half Rambo Samb0 picked a second 30 point jam, and went right back in on the next jam to pick up 13 more before finally taking a rest. Memphis's Tenacious B managed to pick up a few leads, but just couldn't get the points up with the Nashville jammers on her tail. The half finished out much like the previous 30 minutes with Nashville repeatedly scoring, and Memphis going back to the line empty handed. At half time Nashville had 141 points, while Memphis managed to only pick up 4 more points in 12 minutes, to end at 17.

Unfortunately for Memphis, the second half was much like the first. Nashville's jammers continued to rack up points while Memphis's jammers were just plain stuck in Nashville's fast powerful packs. I say it was Nashville's packs, because they were in complete control the entire game. After just 10 more minutes of play Nashville rolled over into 200 points while Memphis had only picked up one point. Memphis was finally able to reply on the very next jam, getting a power jam which ended up being eerily similar to the earlier power jam where Little Cinner put up 15 points while Nashville's blockers filled the box. With just 17 minutes left in the game the score was Nashville 203, Memphis 33.

The game wrapped up with Nashville reaching deep on their bench for blockers and jammers, going into a much heavier rotation, as a few Nashville skaters put on the jammer panty for the first time. Memphis continued to put their best skate forward, but the gap could not be be over come. Nashville's Ramb0 Samb0 continued to put up 20 plus point grand slams, along with jammers Four Leaf Roller and Slammy Lou Harris, no slouches either, running circles around Memphis's blockers. At 8 minutes left Nashville was over 200 points in the lead at 241 to 37, and just a few minutes later it was 316 to 37 with 3 minutes left on the clock. Memphis managed to put up a few points for pride in the last few minutes, but the game ended at Nashville 328 to Memphis 41.
